Jumping up to 2022 Leiden Ranking 6th … Acceptance of world-level research quality

1st in Korea for 8 consecutive years in Mathematics & Computer Science … Global prestige with 55th in the world and 14th in Asia

Ranking up in various academic areas, such as 7th in Life & Earth Science and 16th in Physical Science & Engineering, etc.

 It was proved that the research power of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) is at the top of the world.


 YU jumped up from 14th to 6th in total “2022 Leiden Ranking.” Among them, YU positioned at domestic top for 8 consecutive years in Mathematics & Computer Science indicating its prominent research power. Especially, world ranking in Mathematics & Computer Science was significantly elevated.YU ranked at 55th among 1,318 evaluated universities and ranked at 14th among 561 Asian universities showing its world-level research power.


 In addition, YU showed ranking up in most of areas such 7th in Life & Earth Science and 16th in Physical Science & Engineering in Korea with acceptance of its excellent research power.


 President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “In the global university evaluation, YU has been receiving good evaluation results year after year. The ranks rose in most of academic areas of total evaluation including Mathematics & Computer Science where YU ranked at domestic top for 8 consecutive areas and the position of a global prestigious private university has been settled. This is the performance of accumulated capabilities of all university members including professors and staffs. I will provide full support for cultivation of globally competitive talents based the excellent educational & research power of YU. The future will be the times of specified department brands rather than university brands. I will support specialization of world-level departments.”


“Leiden Ranking” is the ranking of universities in the world based on qualitative levels of theses of universities’ research power evaluated by Leiden University in Netherlands. As the rank is determined based on the ratio between number of theses and IF of theses with exclusion of subjective qualitative evaluation including reputations of universities, it is deemed as an important index to estimate performances and quality of researches of universities. This year, 1,318 universities in 69 countries around the world which have published more than 800 theses in international academic journals for four years from 2017 to 2020 were evaluated. In case of Korea, 49 universities were included in the evaluation.

 Leiden Ranking is announced in five areas including Mathematics & Computer science, Biomedical & Health sciences, Life & Earth sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Social Sciences & Humanities as well as total ranking.
